How to Create Filter Reset Button in Tableau

When building dashboards with multiple filters, it’s often helpful to include a "Reset" button that allows users to quickly return all filters to their default settings with a single click.

How to Create Filter Reset Button in Tableau

When creating Tableau dashboards, it's common to use multiple filters. However, users often find it inconvenient to reset each filter manually when they want to view the data with new conditions. While Tableau offers an "Revert" button, it's not always easy to find or use, which can make it less helpful.

In this post, I'll show you how to make a reset button using two filters as an example. If your dashboard has more filters, you can simply repeat the steps for each one.

Step-by-Step: Creating Filter Reset Button

  1. Create a sheet with filters applied: For this example, we’ll build a sheet showing sales by city, with "Region" and "State/Province" filters applied.

  1. Design the reset button sheet: Create a simple sheet that will serve as the reset button. You can design it to fit the style of your dashboard.

  1. Add the sheets to the dashboard: Place both the sales sheet and the reset button on your dashboard. Also, include the "Region" and "State/Province" filters in the dashboard layout.

  1. Configure the reset action: Set up a dashboard action that clears the "Region" and "State/Province" filters. Since the reset button doesn’t contain these fields, you’ll see a "⚠️ Missing fields" warning, but this is intentional and will cause the filters to reset.

  1. Disable selection highlighting: Add a final action to cancel the selection highlight that appears when the reset button is clicked.
